I came across this painting a few years ago in a second hand store. There I found it sitting on the floor in a basket with various pictures from WW2 , I was attracted to it immediately. I bought it for my husband who is a history buff. It is framed and matted. Time has been kind to it. There werent any markings on the old frame or painting. The painting has a signature in the corner. The signature reads "Homy Denn AEF" If anyone knows of or has ever seen like paintings please contact me thru Urban Armory. Thanks, R. Holtz

Sir, I was visiting the site when I saw you post of that picture. I happen to have information on it you may find interesting. A little background on where my information comes from. I and until recently, my Grandparents are from Johnstown Pennsylvania. My Grandfather, Paul Strayer, before being drafted into the Army for World War II, worked at the local Sears store. There he met and became good friends with a man named Ray Fesler. Mr. Fesler served in World War I and among other keepsakes, gave my Grandfather a book. The book is now in my possession. The title is U.S. Official Pictures of the World War. It has your picture on the front cover. There is a separate print of the picture inside the book with a tag on it. The tag reads as follows: AT BAY painted by Captain Harvey Dunn, A.E.F. in France 1918. The original of this famous painting is now in the National Museum, Washington D.C., and this exact color reproduction is presented to the subscribers to the first edition of the U.S. Official Pictures of the World War so that it can be framed and hung as a permanent reminder of the heroism and self denial of the American fighting man in the World War. Also inside this book is an original pamphlet that was issued to all soldiers returning to the U.S. after the war. I hope you find this information useful. I hope youll excuse the length of this but Id also like to relate a side note concerning my Grandfather and Mr. Fesler. Mr. Fesler carried with him in WWI a bible. Upon his return home and befriending of my Grandfather, when my Pap was drafted Mr. Fesler gave this bible to Pap to carry with him. Pap was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division as a scout. The years have been long and Pap no longer remembers the specific unit designations for more detailed information. Pap took part in the invasion of Sicily. Sometime after the invasion but before the battle of Anzio, Pap and a number of others were sent out to observe German positions. Apparently a German artillery observer spotted their movement and called in fire on their position. The majority of the patrol were killed by air bursts in the trees. Pap suffered severe wounds to the insides of both thighs. The rest sounds like a Hollywood clich‚ but Im currently looking at the proof as I type this. That bible that was carried through WWI and into WWII was kept close to Paps heart. Fragments hit this bible and the American flag wrapped around it. The bible has two holes in it. The farthest the fragment went and actually tore the pages ended on the following: St. John, Ch. 20, Verse 17, Touch me not, for I am not yet ascended to my Father. Those words make two lines. The fragment went through and stopped on exactly those two sentences. My Grandfather is now 84 and living in VA. I just recently purchased a Springfield Armory M1 Garand and had the extreme pleasure of being shown its functions and operation by my Pap who carried one for real when it mattered. Robert wanted the exact replica of the current issue S.O.P.M.O.D unit used by todays special forces he loves it so much he wanted everyone to see it and to know who got it for him .Due to the fact alot of these items are military issue and to be sopmod correct they had to be gotten from the military manufacturer not restricted from sale but we all know Uncle Sam gets his stuff first!!So with time and patience we made it happen .Glad your happy Robert and thanks for sharing it with us all!!!
